There are a myriad of reasons why people incorporate facial exercises into their daily regimes. The number one reason is that as we contend with age and gravity, the muscles within our faces and around our bone structure begin to weaken, thus causing our skin to sag and morphing our once youthful faces into a more aged appearance. For some cosmetic surgery is the answer to a more supple and toned facial appearance; others however would rather not go under the knife or endure risky surgical operations and thus they choose to do a series of proven and reliable facial exercises to tone and enhance their looks.
In addition to one wanting to simply look younger, many medical professionals and researchers also recommend a series of facial exercises to those who suffer from muscle and nerve disorders such as Bell’s Palsy and Ramsey Hunt Syndrome with staggering success. Below are some simple facial exercises that you can try for a more natural and youthful look, or to help strengthen core muscles and nerve endings in each of the 44 facial muscles we have.
Facial Exercises – Removing Wrinkles from the Forehead
Many don’t realize how much havoc we wreak on our foreheads. With every facial expression or tense body movement, we shift and use the muscles in our forehead. To assist with fine lines in this area try this exercise at least once per day.
Sit in front of a mirror so you have a clear view of the front of your face and forehead. Gently place your index fingers about a quarter inch from the beginning of your eyebrows. Gently pull your fingers in a downward motion while at the same time arching your eyebrows. This is a great exercise for removing fine lines and strengthening the muscles in the forehead area. Do this exercise 10 times with no resting period in between.
Tightening the Lips
Place one or two fingers in your mouth and secure your lips around the middle of the fingers. Use a sucking motion to tense your lips around the fingers with as much force as you can manage. Release and repeat in 10 intervals.
Facial Exercises – Combat Crow’s Feet
With your eyes open and in front of a mirror if possible attempt to lift and lower your bottom eye rims while not moving the upper lids. Although this is one of the most difficult exercises to do and takes a lot of practice, even if you don’t notice them actually moving, the inner core muscles are still working diligently and can help decrease the amount of lines and wrinkles around and in the corners of the eyes.
Tone Cheeks
This exercise will make you feel a little silly but it is a great one to do regularly in order to tone your cheek area. Sit or stand comfortably and purse your mouth into an O shape. To get the proper form it helps to actually make an O sound with your voice. Once you have secured the proper O form, smile as big as you can with your lips still pursed and try to maintain the O shape. Hold for a few seconds and release. Do these exercises 10 times each day.
Neck and Chin Areas
The neck and chin areas are often one of the first places that we notice our skin losing its vitality and tautness. Try these exercises to tighten and smooth out lines in these areas.
It is best to sit somewhere comfortably. Place two to four index fingers in the center of your neck and at the same time gently lean your head back as if trying to gaze at the ceiling. You should fell a sort of tug of war going on with your fingers and neck muscles and this will let you know you are doing the exercise correctly.
Another exercise that is helpful is to tighten all the muscles within the chin area as hard as you can manage. It helps to grit your teeth and will maximize your strength. Thrust your lower lip forward (the face you would make if you were pouting) and extend it as far as possible while still contracting your chin muscles. Hold that position for a few seconds and then release. Repeat the exercise 10 or 15 times.
Massaging, stroking and gently tapping the face helps to get the blood flowing and can improve your circulation. Both of these things are essential for a more tone appearance and will also give you a flushed appearance that mocks youthfulness. These exercises are commonly used in European and Chinese regions for a tighter and more youthful look.
Facial Exercises – Face Lift Massage
Begin by placing your four index fingers on both hands in the center of your forehead. The fingertips should be about an inch apart. Gently and in a circular motion, work your fingers simultaneously from the center of your forehead for a few seconds and then moving them down and along your temples, cheekbones and finally landing at the chin. Continue the circular motions the entire time your hands are moving about the face. Repeat this exercise 5 to 10 times per day.
Pinching Exercise
To really get the blood flowing take your index finger and your thumb and grab a hold of small sections of your face and skin concentrating on the cheek and jaw line. Gently pinch your skin and hold for just a couple seconds and release. Be careful not to pinch yourself too hard as this can cause bruising. The pressure should be just enough that your skin shows a slight and pinkish change in color. Do this 10 times around the stated areas. When done, gently tap those same areas with two of your fingers to ensure the circulation is flowing freely. For a refreshing ending, place a little natural lemon juice on a cotton ball and gently rub on to the face. Lemon juice is a great natural antioxidant and will help tighten your skin tone.
With all the exercises mentioned above, just choose one and start working on it. Remember, the sooner your start the facial exercises, the sooner you’ll achieve the results of a new and fresh look.
